(Nigeria) Skales video gets pulled from Youtube over copyright claims

Oya Shake body.

Skales latest hit record Temper was produced by Krizbeatz the Drummer Boy.

The remix of Skales  hit song ‘Temper‘ featuring Burna Boy has been taken down from Youtube due to a copyright claim by Fela’s management.

Rikki Stein, who had managed Fela for 15 years until his death in 1997 spoke  via email concerning the copyright claim.

He said “Well, the usual procedure when using a sample or using the composition of a third party is to seek permission from the Rights Holder,” Stein said. “I don’t believe that happened in this case. I don’t know Skales personally but would strongly advise him to make the necessary overtures!”

Temper, Produced by Krizbeatz, was reworked from Fela’s “Sorrow, Tears & Blood” and ‘Roforofo Fight’. The song has a strong Afrobeat sampling with the composition and lyrics riffed in the creation of the new work.

Some of Fela’s lyrics were reportedly said to have been interpolated – which is when one singer takes the lines of another singer and changes it for his or her own purpose without changing the melody.

Sources that spoke with ROGMA explained that Fela’s management alerted Youtube about the video which was later pulled down.

The official video now bears the message “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Anikulapo Kuti:”
