(Nigeria) ROG Spotlight: Don Jazzy

Who is the real Dorobucci ?

In the quest to bridge the gab between the African underground scene and mainsream, its important young artist (and producers) emulate and aspire for greatness. There are a few living icons in the African music industry and Mr Dorobucci is one of them. We take a closer look at DonJazzy.
In 2016, its seems every ”big” artist just got back from an European or American tour, its now seems Sony Music and Roc Nation deals are being shared amongst the hottest acts in Africa. But way before that, back when afro beats wasnt ‘cool enough’ Don Jazzy and his lead man D’banj of the infamous Mo’hits era entered uncharted waters back in 2010 when they both got signed to Kanye West’s Good Music imprint, Don Baba J seemed to back out of the deal and moved back to Nigeria to eventually spear head the power house that is Mavin records; but not before he contributed to the highly acclaimed ‘Watch the Throne‘ album by Jay Z & Kanye West, with production credit for the track ‘Lift off‘.

An Ear for Talent

Don Jazzy has proven time and time again he has the midas touch when it comes to making hits and picking the right artist to package the hit. Sure perhaps he touched the wrong apple a few times, but that doesnt take away from his impressive CV as a record exec and music A&R, from D’banj to Wande Coal, Dr Sid to Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello to Reekado Banks! Not to mention the newest member of the Mavin crew, former Tripple MG superstar Iyanya.

Tiwa Savage will be the  second artist under Don Jazzy’s leadership to seal a major international management deal, Nigerian twitter went mental when pictures surfaced of Tiwa Savage, Don Jazzy, and Jay Z at the Roc Nation headquarters in New York . We wont be suprised if Iyanya (or Reekado Banks) is next!

Creating a sound for a Generation

Its crazy to belive that the Don Jazzy sound has remained the mainstream sound of Nigeria for over a decade! With over 100 mainstream songs under his belt he still finds new inspiration to keep the radio and fans happy. Don Jazzy is a big believer in team work and collaborating with other producers, besides mentoring younger artist and producers, more recently he has allowed upcoming Mavin producers Altims and Baby Fresh to take the production lead on recent projects. Althought the artist side of Don Jazzy has featured on many hit songs, suprisingly he doesnt think his own vocals are tolerable enough for extended play or a solo project, thats why he rather teams up with more talented vocalist than himself. A true A&R  indeed!
